Only it is something too difficult to change about himself. There has always been some kind of distance. He never sought to physically bond with anyone, someone else always persisted.
He recalls Stahn's own persistence which led to him acknowledging him and holding his hand but Chal is different. Maybe this contact cemented it. Before Chal's form did not allow the thought but this person has always looked after him. Always at his side. Perhaps he wishes changed long ago but there is a realization that being here with Chal is the closest he has ever gotten to fulfilling it.

[He can't even send it back (and he would too despite the rudeness of taking such actions against the gift). He instead ignores it for a good part of the day. When he does open it he really does wish he could send it back. But if he can't send it back he can send it somewhere else. Yep, he totally sent everything to that person.]
